NOV. 17, ST. PETERSBURG -- Independent businesses often offer sales and specials during the holiday season, but they don't usually receive the level of media attention given to larger national retailers. In reaction to this, LocalShops1 created Shopapalooza, Tampa Bay's Independent Alternative to Black Friday.  Saturday, Nov. 17 marked LocalShops1's third annual Shopapalooza, which witnessed overwhelming local support for independent businesses in the Tampa Bay area.

City Park's Department officials estimated more than 5,000 consumers shopped at more than 100 participating business and community partners present.  Supported by strong print and social media campaigns, the event attracted the attention of news outlets including Bay News 9 and the Tampa Bay News Wire.

In recognition of the event's substantial positive impact on the local economy, the City of St. Petersburg released a Proclamation declaring Nov. 17, 2012 "Shopapalooza Day."

LocalShops1's Shopapalooza dispels the myth that local businesses don't offer competitive prices, selection and service.  The event featured discounts of up to 70%, along with prizes, giveaways and reduced price gift certificates.

"We want people to begin their holiday shopping at Shopapalooza and then return to the stores they find throughout the holiday season," said Mo Venouziou, Vice President of LocalShops1.  "Locally owned businesses offer diversity and local character that larger chains can't compete with.  On top of that, every dollar spent at an independent local business has a profoundly stronger impact on our local economy than a dollar spent at a national chain."

LocalShops1 is a coalition of hundreds of businesses and thousands of energized shoppers who understand that to support local business is to support your neighbors, community and regional economy.  Founded in 2008 by Ester Venouziou, LocalShops1 has grown to be the most active voice for small business in Tampa Bay.

Held every year on the Saturday before Thanksgiving, LocalShops1's Shopapalooza has grown in tandem, with a 400% increase in attendance from the previous year. The event this year was presented by the City of St. Petersburg and the St. Petersburg Area Chamber of Commerce.
