ST. PETERSBURG, Sept. 5, 2012  -- Four businesses and two business organizations are working together to collect items for Daystar, a St. Petersburg organization that offers emergency assistance to Pinellas County residents.

The effort is part of LocalShops1's new LUCK, Locals Uniting for Community Kindness, a member-led initiative to help spotlight and support local non-profits. The program, spearheaded by member Brigitte Whitaker of No Name Java in St. Petersburg, is a collaborative effort between local businesses and shoppers who want to make a difference in their community.

"We can't overlook all these people who need our help," Brigitte says. "Sometimes the people who have the least are the ones who give the most."

Participating businesses are No Name Java, Rande James Spa, The Peaceful Warrior and Being, all in St. Petersburg. Also participating are LocalShops1 and the Gulfport Chamber of Commerce. Donations may be dropped off at any of the participating locations.

How LUCK works:
Each quarter, LocalShops1 members vote on a featured non-profit and agree to work on a collaborative fundraising effort to raise money and/or items the non-profit needs.Shoppers are encouraged to bring items from the wish list to one of the drop-off locations.

LocalShops1 also commits to donating proceeds from 1Card/Shopper membership sales. Shoppers may include "LUCK" in the "how did you hear about us" section, along with the person or business that referred them, and $15 of every sale will go to the featured non-profit.

This quarter's non-profit is Daystar Life Centerfounded in 1982, which assists thousands of individuals and families. In the past year, for example, the center distributed more than 11,000 bags of food and 10,000 items of clothing. Ninety-five percent of all donations go straight back to help those in need. The remaining five percent goes toward administrative costs and fundraising efforts. The center is at 226 Sixth St. S. in St. Petersburg. It can be reached at 727.825.0442.

Shoppers and businesses are encouraged to nominate local non-profits to be the featured charities. Self-nominations are also accepted. To submit a nomination, go to
