April 14: A Conversation with Celebrated Historians

Posted By LocalShops1, Wednesday, April 8, 2015

While the battlefields of World War I were far from the Sunshine State, the war’s reach extended into the social, cultural, political and economic lives of Floridians.

On April 14, 2015, the St. Petersburg Museum of History presents Thinking Through WWI – Florida, U.S. and the World – an interactive conversation of World War I and the legacy it left for Florida and the United States.

The event, led by renowned historian Dr. Gary Mormino, begins at 6 pm. Admission is free and open to the public. Dr. Mormino, professor emeritus of history at the University of South Florida – St. Petersburg, will be joined by Dr. Ronald Granieri, director of research at the Lauder Institute of International Studies, University of Pennsylvania.

The conversation will offer insight on how the war affected Florida, from rubber and fuel shortages to the fur trade of the Seminole Indians, as well as how World War I changed the place of the United States in global diplomacy.

Thinking Through WWI – Florida, U.S. and the World is sponsored by the Florida Studies Program and the Department of History and Politics at University of South Florida-St. Petersburg, the Florida Humanities Council and the St. Petersburg Museum of History.

The St. Petersburg Museum of History is at 335 2nd Ave. NE in St. Petersburg. Paid parking is available in the Beach Drive overflow lot next to the Museum on The Pier approach. For more information visit or call 727-894-1052.
