Call to Artists from City of Tampa

Posted By LocalShops1, Wednesday, April 8, 2015

The City of Tampa is seeking "bold, innovative and engaging" public art projects for its Julian B. Lane Riverfront Park, next to the University of Tampa campus. The 23-acre park is the focus of a community-driven design process to transform the neighborhood park into a regional destination that will host music/arts festivals, sporting competitions and more. Artists who work with sustainable materials are encouraged to apply.

Entrance Gateway & Arrival Plaza
Estimated budget:  $200,000 to $400,000 each
There are two entrances  on North Boulevard and a plaza on Laurel Street. The gateways are envisioned as being vertical elements, but not necessarily  arches or traditional gateways.

Environmental/River’s Edge

Estimated budget: $200,000 to $250,000
The Hillsborough River will be visible from anywhere on the site after removal of the large berms and establishing a gentle slope to the river. The park will include a wide promenade, community center and boathouse, and will offer locals and tourists new access points to an ecological greenway, paddling/boating opportunities and land trails that connect with other city trails, including Bayshore Boulevard.

Estimated budget: $200,000 to $250,000
JBL Riverfront Park started as a cigar factory and living quarters for 400 workers in 1893. When the cigar factory closed, workers moved away and the community was bulldozed in the early 1960s. The University of Tampa purchased the property to build an athletic center, and several years later the city obtained the property in a land swap to design the park, which opened in 1977.

The deadline to apply is Friday, May 15, 2015. Contracts will be finalized July or August 2015, and the work is to be completed by late 2016/early 2017.

For detailed project description and application information, download the city's complete Request for Qualification.
