May 18, 2013 event paying tribute to the St. Pete Pier resonates with the community.
That event was the day-long festival, Raise a Toast to the Pier, organized by LocalShops1, Patch.com and the St. Pete Pier.
Bay News 9 televised interviews both before and during the event. As the Pier party was about to begin they said, "The Pier is set to close at the end of the month to make way for a new structured called The Lens. But before that happens, a big goodbye party is taking place today. Hundreds and maybe even thousands of people are expected
to show up." (May 18, 2013)
Thousands was right.
"A simmering heat over Tampa Bay didn’t discourage scores of people from gathering at The Pier on Saturday for one of the last parties at the 40-year-old landmark," reported the Tampa Tribune in an article printed on May 18, 2013.
What exactly does it take to move scores of people? An art show, live music and entertainment, water ski shows, the Ultimate Pier Cocktail Contest and celebrity sunset toasts to the Pier. And, of course, 40 years of memories.
More information about the event can be found here.
