2017 Gecko Ball Theme Chosen: “Geckostock!”

The people have spoken, and they chose “Geckostock!”  as the theme of the 2017 Gecko Ball, beating by a small margin “Gecko Con.”  The other 2017 theme up for consideration, “Cirque du Gecko,” came in third.

The ninth annual Gecko Ball will take place Saturday, August 26, at the Gulfport Casino Ballroom. The Gecko Ball is one of four whimsical, celebratory Gecko-themed events in late summer each year, beginning with the Art Gecko Show and Gecko Crawl, and ending with GeckoFest, Gulfport’s largest annual free street festival, on the Saturday of Labor Day weekend.

More from the news release:

“Geckostock! will be a celebration of the 1969 Woodstock Festival, as well as hippies and the “Peace and Love” generation. The theme will lend itself to a host of 1960s and hippie-themed festivities, including decorations, music, dancing, food and drink, a bevy of silent auction items, the popular live auction of art geckos, coronation of a new Gecko Queen and much more.  Ball-goers are always encouraged to arrive in costumes inspired by the theme.  A costume contest at the Ball encourages a healthy competition.  Each year, the Gecko Ball theme also lends itself to costumes that participants of GeckoFest will flaunt during the festival’s own walking parade and costume contest the following week."
Tickets to the Ball, known as Gulfport’s party of the year, will go on sale July 4, 2017.  To receive updates, visit and “like” the Facebook page for Gecko Ball at  For more information, contact John Haugen at or (727) 623-0524.  All Gecko events are sponsored by the non-profit Gulfport Merchants Association and a portion of proceeds from events are dedicated each year to community charities.
