CASA, Community Action Stops Abuse, is reaching out to the local residents and businesses to organize food drives during their Super Bowl parties and other events through February. Here is their official news release:
ST PETERSBURG, FL -- When quadrupling the size of your domestic violence center you witness great changes. Four times as many lives are forever improved, given a fresh start in a safer future. Four times as many children break the cycle of abuse and learn the emotional strength their guardian has. And, unfortunately, your food costs increase by a factor of four.
CASA is asking individuals and businesses to hold food drives at their Super Bowl parties, workplaces and favorite bars and restaurants throughout the months of January and February. Last July they opened their new 100-bed domestic violence center, and food donations have become their greatest need.
“We reached full capacity at the shelter within months of opening,” said Shandra Riffey, CASA’s Acting Executive Director. “We’ve put in cribs to accommodate children born during their mom’s time at the shelter and have had as many as 100 residents, including 55 children, living there at once. We’re talking about 100 people who have been given a chance to rebuild their lives… That’s a lot of people to feed!”
Momentum is growing as residents and businesses sign on to hold “Soup-er Bowl” food drives throughout southern Pinellas County. A list of donation drop-off locations and information on how to get involved are posted online at casa-stpete.org/souperbowl. Non-perishable food donations, checks and gift cards to supermarkets / wholesale clubs can also be brought to CASA’s administrative offices at 1011 First Ave N, St. Petersburg during normal business hours each Monday throughout the months of January and February. Donations will also be accepted Monday through Friday the entire week following Super Bowl Sunday.
