Organizers of Gulfport’s annual Gecko Ball have announced the results of public voting for the theme of the 2016 Gecko Ball: “20,000 Geckos Under the Sea!” The eighth annual Gecko Ball takes place Saturday, August 27, 2016, at the Gulfport Casino Ballroom. The Gecko Ball is one of four whimsical, celebratory Gecko-themed events in late summer each year, beginning with the Gecko Artists Show and Gecko Crawl, and ending with GeckoFest, Gulfport’s largest annual free street festival held on the Saturday of Labor Day weekend. The voters’ choice won by a razor’s edge over the second place contending theme, “Gecko Fairy Tales.” Other 2016 themes up for consideration during online public voting were “Gecko Hop,” “Geckos at Woodstock,” and “Geckos on Broadway.”
“20,000 Geckos Under the Sea” will be a celebration of all things on, under and near the sea. The Ball will feature music, dancing, food and drink, a bevy of silent auction items, live auction of artist-created geckos, and more. Costumes are a highlight of every Gecko Ball, and Ball-goers will no doubt offer a spectacle of outfits depicting real and imaginary sea creatures, as well as a salty cast and crew of seagoing and seaside characters. An annual costume contest at the Ball encourages a healthy competition. Each year, the Gecko Ball theme also lends itself to costumes that participants of GeckoFest will flaunt during the festival’s own walking parade and costume contest the following week.

All Gecko events are sponsored by the non-profit Gulfport Merchants Association and a portion of proceeds from events are dedicated each year to community charities.
