April 18: USFSP Food Conference

The second annual USF St. Petersburg Florida Food Conference: Community and Culture will take place at the University Student Center, 140 7th Ave. S., at USF St. Petersburg on Saturday, April 18, 2015.

The daylong event will feature an exciting keynote from Locale Market's Executive Chef Don Pintabona and a choice of interesting breakout sessions focused on food in our community and culture. A catered lunch will be provided. Conference participants will also have the chance to join the day's speakers for a Locale-catered breakfast before the event and a sponsored beer and wine after party. Online registration is now open.


Keynote speaker:

Chef Don Pintabona, co-owner of Locale Market in the Sundial complex in downtown St. Petersburg, has more than 30 years experience in the food industry, including a stint as executive chef at Robert DeNiro’s Tribeca Grill in New York. A first-generation Italian born in Oceanside, N.Y, Don spent his early years working at Grand Union Supermarket with his father and later earned a degree from the prestigious Culinary Institute of America.


Breakout sessions:
Rice: A Cross-cultural Conversation
A lively panel discussion on how this universal food staple has different cultural meanings.
Panelists include Thuy Le, owner La V Vietnamese fusion restaurant, St. Petersburg; Bob Devin Jones, founder Studio @ 620 and author of “Uncle Bends: A Home-Cooked Negro Narrative” and Vivian Fueyo, USFSP


Florida Seafood: The Good Catch
A look at sustainability and bounty from one of Florida’s greatest natural resources. Speakers include authors Pam Brandon, Katie Farmand and Heather McPherson, “Good Catch" and Cinthia Sandoval, Wild Ocean Seafood Market, Port Canaveral

DIY Cookbooks: Getting Started
Gathering family recipes for future generations – or maybe for sale. Speakers include Sherry Gore, Sarasota food writer and author of “Me, Myself and Pie” and “Simply Delicious Amish Recipes” and Virginie Martocq, co-owner, Heritage Cookbook, Toronto

Sizzling Images: Video Tips from the Pros
Preserving stories and capturing cooking techniques with the moving image. Presented by HSN videographers
