Congratulations to our awesome members Dave and Lisa Burns, who recently celebrated 10 years in business!
"A lot has changed since we opened the first store back on Oct. 20, 2004," Lisa writes. "We have evolved and grown to include many outdoor living services but one thing that will never change is our commitment to our customers! Without the support of our family & friends, and all of you, there would be no Backyard Getaway."
And their commitment to customers -- and the community -- is why we love them so much.
Lisa and Dave are both actively involved in local charities, local schools and local programs to improve their neighborhoods. They joined LocalShops1 back when we first started, in 2008, when "Buy Local" wasn't a trendy catch phrase, and even hosted our second-ever social! These days they're still one of the main supporters of the Buy Local movement and serve as contributing writers for our magazine, Live Local! (Be sure to check out Issue No. 2 for a chance to win a custom-built pallet garden!)
"They say if you do what you love it is not work. I won't lie. What I do is hard work. Going into a customer's yard and creating my vision, and seeing a smile on their face or a tear or getting a hug is what makes the hard work worthwhile," Dave says. "One of my favorite parts of our business is our school projects. Getting kids and adults to put down their phones and games and get their hands dirty and create something beautiful makes me proud that I could teach them to enjoy the outdoors. My hope is that I have helped the future generation learn to appreciate nature."
Below is a photo of Dave and Lisa back in 2009, during their five-year anniversary celebration. Be sure to check out the photo album on Facebook for dozens more photos from the past decade. You'll find pictures from their charity pond tours, classes and workshops, pond club get-togethers and much more!
