Preserving Florida

Posted By LocalShops1, Tuesday, October 22, 2013

LocalShops1 member Backyard Getaway has partnered with Be Floridian, a new campaign to teach homeowners the benefits of Florida Friendly Landscaping. Be a Floridian is an organization "for preserving Florida for boating, fishing and drinks with little umbrellas."

In Florida, they explain, summer rains don’t water fertilizer in — they wash it off our lawns and into our lakes, bays and oceans. The excess nitrogen and phosphorus in the water feeds algae blooms that use up oxygen, kill fish and turn the water the color of pea soup. As more people move to the Tampa Bay area, the problem gets bigger.

As a Be Floridian business partner, Backyard Getaway pledges to promote the nine principles of Florida Friendly Landscaping and to help educate their customers about the Be Floridian principles of not fertilizing during summer months and using slow-release fertilizers during the rest of the year.

Backyard Getaway can help homeowners create low maintenance, water conserving landscapes by reducing lawn areas and utilizing hardscapes, xeriscapes and waterscapes.
