Paws for Friendship, started 22 years ago, is an all-volunteer 501c3 non-profit that helps connect family pets with people in need throughout the world. The Tampa-based non-profit's community-outreach program brings certified therapy pets to schools, libraries, adolescent facilities and nursing homes.
From their application for Best Non-Profit:
"Paws For Friendship began with the unending compassion and determination of a rescued Great Dane named Jennie," says Jan Schmidt, president. "Jennie came into my life the year I had lost my mom and brought me back to life. She walked into a nursing home and pulled me with her. As I changed my mind and tried to leave she pulled harder until before I knew it we were visiting with a resident and this precious woman in her 90s was telling me what a beautiful dog she was and she thanked us both for coming to visit with her. On that day my life was changed forever. "
