ST. PETERSBURG, JUNE 6, 2013 -- LocalShops1 is now accepting nominations for its annual Small Business Awards, which will take place Sunday, Aug. 4, at the Safety Harbor Resort & Spa. The keynote speaker is Daniel James Scott, of the Sustainable Entrepreneurship & Innovation Alliance at USFSP College of Business. Scott was recently named Florida's Small Business Advocate of the Year by the Small Business Administration.

"Daniel is one of the top leaders in Tampa Bay's entrepreneur community, and one of the most inspiring speakers I've ever heard," said Ester Venouziou, LocalShops1 founder. "We're thrilled to have him speak at our event this year."

To nominate a local business for a business award, go to Businesses must be locally owned, in the Tampa Bay region (Pinellas, Hillsborough or Pasco) and have fewer than 50 full-time employees. Businesses may be nominated in one of four categories:

  • Best New Business
We were looking for businesses that launched in the past five years, and are already the talk of the town! Businesses that are innovative, creative and daring. Afterall, these are businesses that launched during the recession. Most of all, we're looking for living proof that dedication pays off.
Past winners: T&Me Tea Co., The Peaceful Warrior Massage, Three Birds Tavern

  • Best Established Business
Lasting power is what this one is all about. Despite the economic ups and downs, these are shops, restaurants and other businesses that have carried on and continue to make our neighborhoods happier and brighter!
Past winners: Domain Home Accessories, Being, Write One Creative Services

  • Most Community-Minded Business
These business owners go above and beyond to help local charities and other local businesses. These are the ones who organize fundraisers, donate to silent auctions, help tech-challenged neighbors and give shoutouts to emerging entrepreneurs. Why? Because they care.
Past winners: Gulfport Tuesday Fresh Market, St. Pete Community Acupuncture, Illuminated Publishing

  • Best at Grassroots Marketing
There’s no huge advertising budget, but this business doesn’t need giant billboards to get the message out. Facebook, Pinterest, YouTube, email marketing, cross-promotions, and good old-fashioned word of mouth bring in customers.
Past winners: Hartley Chiropractic Center, St. Pete Bagel, Intensity Academy

There will be two winners in each category; one in the popular vote, the other the judges' choice. In addition, LocalShops1 is accepting nominations for the best local shopper, aka LocalShops1 Girl's BFF, the conscientious shopper who likes to support his or her neighborhood shops and restaurants. Now, we're not saying this person NEVER goes to the chains and Big Box stores. But this Shopper makes an effort to support the Mom & Pops whenever possible, and loves telling the world about the cool places around. Past winners have included Sandy Hanna-Duffy, Holly Furlong and Linda Evans.

In addition to the awards celebration, the event Aug. 4 will also include a Floppy Hat Contest, prizes, raffles and, as always, surprises. Admission is open to the public. For registration, go to For sponsorship and other  information, email Mo Venouziou at
