Island Flavors And Tings, an award-winning restaurant in Gulfport, will be catering the LocalShops1 Birthday Banquet & Local Business Awards ceremony, which takes place Wednesday, Aug. 8, at the St. Petersburg Museum of History.

A preview of the menu: Think chicken skewers with mango sauce, vegetable spring rolls, yellow rice, meatballs, Jamaican cocktail patties, tropical salads (must try the special Paradise Dressing!) and Helena's famous Mango Bread.

The flavors are described by Tampa Bay Times as a "swirl of sweet, hot and spicy," The spices range from nutmeg to thyme, "slow-cooked to make jerk sauce of finger-licking fire or punchy escovitch made lively with vinegar."

Picture a medley of brilliant bright colors and a lush tropical presentation. Island Flavor buffets are long and lavish, filled with creative Caribbean surprises and traditional favorites.

Helena's Story: Chef/founder Helena Josephs was on her way from Jamaica to New York in 1986, to work on a radio project, when she decided to stop in St. Petersburg to visit her aunt. She loved the area so much that she decided to stay.

She met a group of Caribbean students from USF-St. Pete, and since they didn't have any family in the area, Helena started inviting them to dinners at her aunt's place. That's where Helena's love of cooking began.

Over the next several years Helena researched successful restaurants, read business books, attended workshops. And in 1995, she opened Island Flavors And Tings.

"If you have a passion for something, a dream, stick with it because it will always come true," Helena says. "If you treat people well, and have a positive outlook, it will show in your products and services."

Island Flavors is well known all over Tampa Bay, in part because of Helena's community-minded attitude. Helena is always contributing to fundraisers and charities, and is actively involved in various civic and business organizations. She has received numerous honors, including being named Business Partner of the Year by the City of St. Petersburg in 2010 and one of the top 3 women-owned business in Pinellas County in 2009.

"When I see a group doing something good," she explains, "I always try to be involved."
