Marty Fouts was music instructor for Phil Celli's son at what was then a small music school by a different name. The instruction was top-notch but the building was a mess and the business was crumblng, down to just under 25 kids.  Marty and Phil decided (with their wives' permission. of course) to raid their savings accounts and buy the assets of the school. They built-out a new center, and in January 2013, the St. Petersburg Music Factory was born. Enrollment is up to about 100, and the school focuses mostly on kids, but offers lessons for all ages in all instruments.

Here are excerpts from their application for LocalShops1's 2014 Best in Biz Awards:

"We tried different kinds of advertising, but the one thing that always seemed to work the best was the simple word of mouth and a strong web page. We have spent MANY hours working on making sure our name showed up on the first page of a Google search. We have a very active Facebook page and Twitter account that helps us connect to our customers, but it all comes back to parents of our students telling other parents about us. We’re still not where we want to be number wise, but as long as we keep doing our jobs, we believe new students will continue to find us."

"We are great believers in giving back to the community. We have worked with an organization called Directions for Living in Clearwater on giving free Music Lessons for kids in the foster care system.  For some kids it was the greatest thing in the world, for others, music was not their thing, which always bums us out a bit.  However, we continue to search for those kids in need who want to feel the joys of playing an instrument.
