Entrepreneurial Couples: Jo-Anne Peck & Craig DeRoin

Posted By LocalShops1, Tuesday, February 11, 2014

Jo-Anne Peck and Craig  DeRoin met on a construction job site when Craig was hired as the contractor to remodel a 1920s apartment complex and Jo-Anne was hired to do the preservation design.

"At first it was all business, but then we started talking, and talking lead to dinner, and dinner lead to full time dating," Jo-Anne explains. "We merged our businesses early on since they were mutually compatible. After a year and half we got married, then started a family."

Their business started as a  preservation design-build company, then they got their dream opportunity: managing the relocation and renovation of historic buildings in the path of I-4 improvements in Ybor City. As that job wrapped up, Craig came up with the idea to build historically appropriate sheds, garages and cottages, so they shifted gears and developed Historic Shed.

"It’s been a big departure for us, but we are both workaholics and our skills are perfectly suited for building a business from the ground up," Jo-Anne says.

How do you make it all work, family and business?

We have worked together since the day we met. Plenty of people we meet tell us they could never work with their spouse. For us, it’s the opposite: we couldn’t work without each other.

Most of the time we get along pretty well, but for those times that we don’t, having to work out problems together while on the job always gets us past the rough spots. After all, if you aren’t speaking to each other, the business goes down the tubes. Our skills are mutually compatible - he can’t do what I do, and you don’t want me building the sheds from scratch!

Our biggest problem is not being able to leave work at the office, which makes it hard to have down time at home. We also forget to take time out to have fun sometimes.

Most of the time it works very well. We both understand what the other is going through when things are weighing on us. And we can throw ideas off each other whenever the inspiration hits.

Historic Shed is at 1212 Ponce de Leon Blvd. in Brooksville. Craig and Jo-Anne can be reached at 813.333.224.
