For Tom and Jodi Milner, owning their own fitness company is, seriously, fun.
The couple started working together in 2007 and began their own company, Seriously Fun Fitness, four years later. Since then, the two have learned how to work with each other, designate responsibilities and keep the romance "off the clock.”
There’s a third person in the relationship, Jodi says: "He and I and the business.”
Communication is key in making sure operations, marketing, social media and day-to-day duties run smoothly, the couple says.
"Sometimes there (are) things going on in my head that I forget to share with him. So, now we copy each other every time we send emails,” " Jodi says.
Communication is extra important for this couple, since Jodi's other job, as an international flight attendant, keeps her away much of the time.
Jodi handles marketing, advertising and social media remotely, while Tom runs the fitness center and teaches classes. The arrangement allows for them to spend time away from each other and remind them just how much the other person does to make it work.
"You become a lot more appreciative,” says Jodi, who also credits their success to their ability to be flexible.
"Know when you’re going into it that there’s going to be some ‘tug of wars’,” she says.
With Valentine’s Day approaching, you would think the Milners have plans for the day of love. But Jodi says the key to making time for each other isn’t working around a date on the calendar, it’s "carving out little bits of time to make sure we still work on our relationship instead of talking business.”
Once or twice a month they have a "Tom and Jodi day” and enjoy each other’s company. "Celebrate whenever you can,” Jodi says.
Seriously Fun Fitness is at 5316 Seminole Blvd. in Seminole. Tom and Jodi can be reached at 727.504.5238
