Meet Crystal McFadden, community outreach coordinator for CASA, Community Action Stops Abuse, in St. Petersburg. CASA, a longtime LocalShops1 not-for-profit member, has been working in the Tampa Bay area since 1977. The organizationt provides domestic violence and prevention services including a 24 hour crisis hotline, emergency shelter, long term housing, outreach services, support groups, mental health, substance abuse advocacy, legal advocacy, primary prevention, community education and professional training.
CASA is the only certified domestic violence center in St. Petersburg and the southern half of Pinellas County. Each year, they provide services to more than 6,000 people. With their help, domestic violence victims become survivors - empowered with the skills, safety planning and resources needed to keep their families safe.
Unfortunately, their 30-bed shelter is not enough, and CASA turns away more than 1,400 women and children each year. Next summer, though, they are expected to open a new 100-bed emergency shelter. They're now working to raise $12 million for that through their "Sunshine and Hope" Capital Campaign. To help, check out their donation page.
