Daystar Life Center in St. Petersburg is our featured non-profit in LUCK, Local Uniting for Community Kindness, for summer 2012. Throughout August, September and October, LocalShops1 businesses and friends will be collecting much-needed supplies for the center, which provides emergency help to individuals and families, most of whom are living below the federal poverty level.
LocalShops1 will also be donating proceeds from 1Card sales to Daystar.
Daystar Life Center was founded in 1982 as a small parish ministry of "people helping people." Clients from Pinellas County are referred by utility companies, Pinellas County Social Services, Food Stamp Office, Helpline Information and Referral, the faith community and private agencies.
With the support of more than 100 volunteers and just two staff members, every year the center assists thousands of individuals and families. In the past year, for example, the center distributed more than 11,000 bags of food and 10,000 items of clothing.
Ninety-five percent of all donations go straight back to help those in need. The remaining five percent goes toward administrative costs and fundraising efforts.
The center is at 226 Sixth St. S. in St. Petersburg. It can be reached at 727.825.0442.

Locals United for Community Kindness
Each quarter, the organization's members vote on the featured non-profit and agree to work on a collaborative fundraising effort to raise money and/or items the non-profit needs. Shoppers are encouraged to bring items from the wish list to one of the drop-off locations. LUCK is a member-led initiative organized by Brigitte Whitaker of No Name Java.
LocalShops1 also commits to donating proceeds from 1Card/Shopper membership sales. Just include "LUCK" in the "how did you hear about us" section, along with the person or business that referred you, and $15 of every sale will go to the featured non-profit.
